They also had lodgers in the house: George Grist who was a "Tinman" and Thomas Baker Labourer and a visitor Charles Mew (New) who was 9 years old john jonathon Page Shervell married Amelia New in 1841.

The Census has him as superannuated Lawyer and Grocer.. why would he retire as a lawyer to become a grocer in what was then one of the seedier parts of portsmouth...?
